How to start a containers flower garden

When you have decided to start a containers flower garden, the most important factor to your success is in selecting the pots and the media to be used. The media is very important as the anchorage on which the plants will grow as well as the source of water and nutrition for the plants.

The pots selection should be done well in advance. The right size of pot is one which will provide the plant with enough area for the roots to grow and also provide enough media to hold water, nutrients and oxygen. Small plants will be okay in small pots but plants that are likely to grow big may need big pots that are proportional to their size.

After selecting the suitable pots in which to start a container garden, carefully thing of the media to be used and pay specific emphasis on water retention of the media, drainage of the media and also those specific plants may require specific types of media in order to grow well. Some plants will only grow well in forest soils, so the media chosen must incorporate forest soils for example.

When starting a containers flower garden, the way the pots are filled with media is very important. The pots should be filled in such a way that they facilitate drainage as well as water retention.

At the bottom of the container, ensure that you have enough holes to remove excess water after watering. When filling up the containers, the bottom layer should be a layer of coarse pebbles. Here all the excess water will collect in the spaces provided in between the pebbles leaving the root zone well drained.
The next layer should be of medium sized pebbles and the next should be of very fine pebbles and then the rest of the space (about 60%) of the pot you fill with your selected planting media.

Before planting the flowers, water the pots well and ensure that water comes out of the container holes. Then plant the flowers and water again to make sure that the plant roots and the media are in contact. When planting in the containers, observe the recommended planted depth and watering should be regulars and can easily be overdone.
