CLIMATIC EFFECTS ON GARDENING DECISIONS

With your growing space already identified, analyzed and understood, it is now time to think about the weather patterns of the part of the world you live in.

There are basically three types of climate for gardening
1. The temperate climates where there are four seasons in a year all of them affecting a garden and plants in different ways. These are
• Winter when conditions force the plants to become dormant,
• Spring when the winter weather starts changing and plants start becoming active,
• Summer which provided the best climate for plant growth and when you will really enjoy your garden,
• Autumn when plants start preparing for winter.
2. Sub tropics have only two seasons winter and summer and the winter is mild in nature.
3. Tropical climates have fairly uniform temperatures throughout the year and plants can grow throughout.

The type of climate will affect the plants you choose to plant in your garden. Temperate climates sometimes get too cold for plants of tropical origin to survive and if the choice of your plants are tropical in nature, then you have to modify your environment by building green houses which can be heated in winter to keep the plants alive and growing.

In the tropics, plants that originate from the tropics may need a cold stimulant to break dormancy, may need additional light of lack of light in order to flower, fruit or propagate.

Understand your weather well as this will guide you in your plant choice, growing space choice and gardening systems and structures choice. To learn more about gardening, this E-book will help alot.
